Has anyone here ever successfully executed blinking eyes? Can you link me to a post about it? I'm planning on spending some quality time with my dad over the holidays who happens to know a thing or two about robotics, and told me that we could possibly make blinking eyes with servo motors. I'm wondering if this has ever tackled this sort of project before and if I could get any advice before launching into a project like this blindly.

thanks

Hey all, just wanna say a BIG thank you to those of you who offered me some advice on my beak and jaw. I don't think this would be turning out anywhere near as good as it is without your invaluable tips!

This is my first head, it's for a partial of a gryphon I'll be wearing to Furry Fiesta in Dallas if all goes well. The beak has been the most time-consuming part by far, but it came out exactly how I wanted and was fun, so I can't complain. :)

Anyway, on to the WIP pics! )

In research mode for next project- have been researching different products/liquids to dip parts of black fur in, so that they only react under blacklight.
My only worry is that washing would remove or smudge the desired blacklight areas.
Some of the products found to react to blacklight are:

BLUE: Petroleum jelly, Antifreeze, Bodily Fluids, Tooth whiteners
BLUE-WHITE: Club Soda/ Tonic Water, Certain Laundry detergents
RED: chlorophyll in alcohol
(this probably wouldn't work in the long term, as chlorophyll would rapidly decay, right?)

Besides just using different coloured furs to achieve patterns under blacklights, does anyone know of inks or dyes that aren't hideously expensive, are permanent, and are visible only under blacklight?

Just a quick question on shorter furs. I've looked in memories and can't find anything.

I'm either going to have made, or make, a rottweiler suit (or have part of it made, and I make the rest), so my question is, what's a good rottweiler faux fur. Most of the stuff I'm finding isn't to my liking (too long) or it looks weird. Rotties have slick, short double coats on them.

What are some options for this? I've seen a few suits in velour or crushed velvet, but I want a soft body suit.

It has to be in black and a brown, and a small bit of white or pink too (for an accent).

Ideas are helpful, links will get you cookies!

I made a vividly colored doggie recently. I found that lots of details seemed to get lost in the black of the suit. I tried to get some better pictures in the day, but they didn't turn out any better. So, here are some ok pictures. It's enough to get the basic idea.. and it's better than a camera phone.

I used lot's of pre existing patterns for this suit saved from previous projects. It has cut my compleation time nearly in half.

So I originally bought two yards of the blue long pile DF fur. I was planning on making a Golduck fursuit, but I won't have the money in time to buy the remaining fur. Instead of making a Golduck partial, I decided I'd try and think of something else.

So any ideas on what sort of animal/character partial I could make with blue fur? I don't want to purchase any additional fur, but I'd be able to get some different colored fleece for shorter areas. I'm going to an anime convention, so anime characters will work as well.

*EDIT* http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/5119/sany0455.jpg is what i have currently, i took it abit lopsided tho. the tiny part on top is just a ref. for me.

im trying to make my own fursuit, dont have a camera atm, but im working on the head right now, entirely out of foam, but cant seem to get the shape of the muzzle/jaw right, it end up either lopsided, or shaped like a brick. anyone have any tips as far as general shapes?

So I've been milling ideas around in my head the last few weeks on how to make good webbed otter paws for the suit I'm making. Looking through the memories I found this awesome tutorial on koi paws.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/6820/pawstutorialiw4.jpg

I was thinking of using this with black fleece, but how can I go about adding fur to the top portion of the fingers?? I really don't like the idea of glueing because that would be super tacky. I've make otter paws before that were just hand paws with webbing hand sewn in between, but I wasn't completely pleased with them. Should I just hand sew the fur hand on top? Is there some method I'm completely missing that I could use?

I'm just stuck.

First things first. This project would have never happened if it wasn't for the fursuit head construction panel at Elliott's Spring Gathering 2009. A big thanks to the fur that ran that panel (sorry I forgot your name). I hope you watch this community and happen to read this post, because I'd like to know what type of foam was given out for free and where I can get more of it.

Some of you may have seen me at MFF where I debuted the completed version of this suit. Yes, it's a Pokémon poo-poo if you want, it's all for fun.

Here's a link to photos of the completed suit. Link! Silly poses are silly.

Here's a link to photos that I remembered to take during the construction process. Hey! Listen.

So, I'd like some constructive criticism and tips on improvement.

Some lessons I've already learned from this process most of this is probably old news to this veteran community:
1. Black lycra may bleed. Wash it first. Maybe multiple times. I made my own balaclava and some red dye came out and stained the neck.
2. I carved the eyes into the head by just eyeballing it. They came out uneven. I'm thinking there's a lot of methods out there where eye making is concerned.
3. Sculpy is brittle. Don't make fine objects with it and expect them to put up with the abuse that a fursuit head normally deals with. The teeth got chipped. I'm thinking of using urethane resin for that kind of detail work in the future.
4. Give yourself a nice airspace to breathe. This head works OK, but could be better.
5. That green foam can show through, especially on white fur. Cover the foam with something inexpensive and lighter in color. Muslin works.

I enjoyed the project and plan on doing more suits. And fursuiting in something you made yourself is a great deal of fun.

I like how the nose turned out, but im not sure about the cheeks, and Im not sure what shape I should use for the eyes.Over all I just think something is missing... What do you guys think?
Thanks for looking!

I know that a few of these questions have been asked before, but i can't seem to find any useful answers.

1) how can you make a fursuit neck look clean and form fitting? like this => http://www.furaffinity.net/view/2633198/does anyone have a pattern and a finished project picture?

2)where can i buy the best airbrushing machine and ink for a tight budget? I'll be wanting an airbrushing machine soon, i figure you are the best people to ask about it.

3) where can I get some Sculpey gloss? i want the teeth i make to look really shiney!

Thank you!

exactly whats said in the title... I have a character with VERY interchangable hair, and split genders, male with short choppy hair and female with shoulder length hair, I'd also like to do 'cosplays' with the suit, its a balaclava and foam head with rather large [13" long] ears, has anyone ever done a suit with interchangable or removeable hair?

I'm making a fox tail with a swirl on the top, and i don't know how to get it to have a curve and a tail like shape. Normally for tails with a slight curve I use a pattern for a side view of the tail, but I sdn't think that'll work now as my tail isn't symmetrical on top, what should I do?

Hello!

Another post from meee! I am feeling a bit limited in my range of fur available to me. I've hunted around online and haven't really found what I'm looking for.

I'm after a soft good quality fur (not the cheap wiry thin rough-feeling stuff), that feels very soft, like otter fur. I've tried searching around for Otter fur, but the range of colours is a bit limited, I'm afraid.

Does anyone know where I could get Royal Blue (around this colour, doesn't have to be exact) that is dense and feels soft?

I know a cheap fur when I see it... I've found toy-fur in Royal Blue, but it was so thin, you could see the backing through the pile. EWWW.

If I can't find it... I'm gonna just give in and make my Fursuit black. Which would be a huge bummer in the Australian heat, most likely. Arrh.

MAJOR thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Hey guys!

I need a little help making a horse-like end to a tail I plan on making eventually. I honestly don't know what materials to use to get the length and the two tone colour. How have you guys made horse tails? Or have any suggestions for materials for me to use?

Pics of the tail here! )
