First things first. This project would have never happened if it wasn't for the fursuit head construction panel at Elliott's Spring Gathering 2009. A big thanks to the fur that ran that panel (sorry I forgot your name). I hope you watch this community and happen to read this post, because I'd like to know what type of foam was given out for free and where I can get more of it.
Some of you may have seen me at MFF where I debuted the completed version of this suit. Yes, it's a
Pokémon poo-poo if you want, it's all for fun.
Here's a link to photos of the completed suit.
Link! Silly poses are silly.
Here's a link to photos that I remembered to take during the construction process.
Hey! Listen. So, I'd like some constructive criticism and tips on improvement.
Some lessons I've already learned from this process most of this is probably old news to this veteran community:
1. Black lycra may bleed. Wash it first. Maybe multiple times. I made my own balaclava and some red dye came out and stained the neck.
2. I carved the eyes into the head by just eyeballing it. They came out uneven. I'm thinking there's a lot of methods out there where eye making is concerned.
3. Sculpy is brittle. Don't make fine objects with it and expect them to put up with the abuse that a fursuit head normally deals with. The teeth got chipped. I'm thinking of using urethane resin for that kind of detail work in the future.
4. Give yourself a nice airspace to breathe. This head works OK, but could be better.
5. That green foam can show through, especially on white fur. Cover the foam with something inexpensive and lighter in color. Muslin works.
I enjoyed the project and plan on doing more suits. And fursuiting in something you made yourself is a great deal of fun.
